SIBO / IBS Breath Test
Recent research has estimated that up to 84% of those suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) actually have Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO).
Overgrowth of bacterial in the small intestine ferment carbohydrates and produce gases that result in bloating after meals, excess gas, abdominal pain/cramping, and diarrhea and/or constipation.
Bacterial overgrowth can be diagnosed using a simple breath test that measures the presence of Hydrogen and Methane gases.

How Is The Test Performed?
SIBO breath test kits can be purchased from the clinic, and the test can be performed at home. The test involves a one-day prep diet, an overnight fast, and 3 hours in the morning for testing. On the morning of the test, you will drink a lactulose solution (not lactose - this is a modified sugar that is not absorbed by the body but instead feeds any bacteria present). Following this you will take breath samples every 20 minutes for 3 hours. It is important that the test uses Lactulose and not other solutions, and that the duration is 3 hours. The kits are mailed to SIBO Canada, a lab that uses the gold standard Quintron breath analyzer. |
