Sleep disorders have become a modern epidemic, and may in fact contribute the greatest burden to our health. There are many different Naturopathic approaches to addressing sleep disorders - in our clinic, we utilize the RightSleep® technique developed by neurologist Dr. Stasha Gominak.
The theory behind the RightSleep® approach is that as humans moved indoors we became Vitamin D deficient as a society. The sleep center in our brain requires sufficient Vitamin D in order to properly get into deep / REM sleep. Furthermore, deep sleep is where we make all of our repairs, so if we are not getting into those stages, we eventually end up with chronic pain, migraines, depression, autoimmune disease, and almost all other modern chronic diseases.
Lastly, Dr. Gominak states that our 'good' gut bacteria need sufficient Vitamin D in order to thrive. So the sleep epidemic is also tied into gut disorders such as IBS. Once we optimize Vitamin D levels, the good gut bacteria return, and sleep and digestive disorders are corrected.
